I have been thinking about the past history of the USA interaction with the Middle East throughout the Cold war period starting in 1945 with Roosevelt's relations with Saudi Arabia. From that time on the USA has supported Wahabbiist Fundamentalist Islam as an anti Left and anti Nationalist force. Everywhere in the Middle East the CIA funded right wing religious groups. (Not just Afghanistan) I just came across this article and it reminded me that even in Iran we tried to get the Ayatollahs to be working with us. (That was Carter's undoing). We worked with the most right wing crackpots in Afghanistan and we definitely were working with right wing Muslim elements in the Balkans, it is alleged that bin Laden was active in the Balkans personally. So when I read this article I was not surprised.

Dreyfuss is alleging that we are backing fundamentalist groups in Iraq, people who are not that different at all from al Qaeda's views.
