Attacks on Mexican police officers by drug cartels have escalated so severely that three police chiefs have sought asylum in the United States in recent months, saying their lives are in danger, Customs and Border Protection officials said. The officials did not identify the officers. Since President Felipe Calderón began an offensive against drug cartels a year and a half ago, more than 200 police officers have been killed.
