Seeing the women in revolutionary Syria

syriawomen

A poster produced by the "Syrian People Know Their Way" collective reads "Syrian women, revolt against every authority!" and "REVOLUTION." Eclipsed from media portrayals except as victims of violence, Syrian women have been at the forefront of the revolution from the beginning. It was a woman who issued the first call for the fall of Bashar Assad's regime. But the role of women—and of secular forces that seek a free and autonomous place for women in Syria—has been sidelined as the conflict has become increasingly dominated by armed actors. Razan Ghazzawi of openDemocracy provides a glimpse of this untold story, and explores the current dilemma.
