Afghanistan’s paramilitaries

Afghan paramilitary

A member of a militia is pictured in Afghanistan's Kunduz city after being driven out of Khanabad district by the Taliban. As US troops withdraw and the Taliban seizes ground, Afghanistan's government is turning to a network of militias to control territory. But these paramilitary militias are abusing the populace—demanding money, wheat and young men as conscripts, in an atmosphere of of complete impunity. Bethany Matta of IRIN reports from the frontlines in Kunduz province.
