Note Duke's hat, reminiscent of a German officer's cap, and the infamous photo of Duke dressed entirely in a Gestapo outfit, holding up a sign reading "Gas the Chicago 7" (most of whom were Jewish), in 1970. Another of his favored placards read "Kunstler is a communist Jew."

Perhaps America's best-known racist, David Duke was instrumental in the Klan resurgence of the 1970s. He has since continued to propagandize white supremacist views as a frequent political candidate, with a variety of fringe organizations and, in recent years, in Russia, Europe and the Middle East. He pioneered the now common effort on the far right to camouflage racist ideas in hot-button issues like affirmative action and immigration, successfully appealing to race and class resentments. Similarly, he was one of the first neo-Nazi and Klan leaders to discontinue the use of Nazi and Klan regalia and ritual, as well as other traditional displays of race hatred, and to cultivate media attention. Since 2001 he has been based in Russia and the Ukraine, where he has participated in Holocaust denial conferences and argued, in writings and lectures, that Israel perpetrated the September 11 attacks. His most recent group, the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, is run by American colleagues under his supervision.
